Netflix’s “The Monster of Florence” — A Chilling True Story of Italy’s Unsolved Serial Murders (Explained Simply)

Netflix has returned with a powerful new true crime drama called The Monster of Florence. This intense four-part series dives deep into one of Italy’s most famous and terrifying real-life mysteries. Between 1968 and 1985, a serial killer hunted young couples in the peaceful countryside near Florence, spreading fear across the entire region.

A Story Set in Tuscany’s Dark Past

The show beautifully captures the calm Tuscan hills while telling a deeply disturbing story.

The series follows the real case of “Il Mostro di Firenze,” which means The Monster of Florence. This unknown killer targeted couples who went to quiet areas to spend time together. The victims were often found shot or stabbed inside their cars.

From 1968 to 1985, this mysterious killer claimed 16 lives. What made it even scarier was that no one was ever truly caught. Many suspects were arrested, but the real murderer remained a mystery.

The Beginning of the Fear

The first known victims were Antonio Lo Bianco and Barbara Locci, murdered in 1968. Locci’s husband, Stefano Mele, was blamed and jailed. But while he was in prison, another couple was killed in the same way — with the same gun. That’s when investigators realized the real killer was still free.

Over 17 years, more couples were found dead — always in isolated spots, always the same weapon. The police soon saw a terrifying pattern.

Brutality Beyond Belief

The show carefully recreates the scenes of the crimes while respecting the victims’ memory.

The killer was known for extreme cruelty. Victims were not only shot — some, especially women, suffered terrible injuries. For example, in 1974, Stefania Pettini and Pasquale Gentilcore were attacked while sitting in a car. Pettini’s body showed signs of brutal violence.

By the early 1980s, Florence lived in fear. In 1981, Giovanni Foggi and Carmela De Nuccio were murdered, and the same pattern followed with Stefano Baldi and Susanna Cambi in 1982. Each killing left the town more terrified and confused.

A journalist named Mario Spezi gave the killer his now-famous name — The Monster of Florence.

Endless Suspects, No Real Answers

Police arrested several people, including Francesco Vinci, his family members, and Pietro Pacciani, who was once convicted but later released after the evidence was found to be fake. Despite years of investigation, no one was ever proven guilty.

The real identity of the murderer remains unknown even today — making it one of Italy’s darkest unsolved cases.

About the Netflix Series

Directed by Stefano Sollima, known for Gomorrah and Without Remorse, this show blends real history with gripping storytelling. In an interview with Variety, Sollima said:

The Monster of Florence is not just a criminal case — it’s a mystery that reflects our fear and silence. These crimes left a wound that never healed.

The show stars Marco Bullitta and Francesca Olia, and it’s produced by Lorenzo Mieli and Gina Gardini under The Apartment and AlterEgo.
